Do you have a room that you want to remodel?
Let's take a bedroom, for example. First of all, get out your pen and paper and decide what you need to change in the bedroom, wall paper, carpeting, ceiling, etc. Then next you'll need to decide the amount of money you can budget for this project.
If you are going to do the work yourself I would suggest deciding first of all what you will do to the floors, will you add carpet, take out carpet and add a tile floor, etc. Then you'll need to decide the color, the type of flooring or carpet you will need, then figure the square feet in the bedroom and then start to price the flooring and decide the exact cost. If you are going to hire someone to do the work, then you will need to add in the labor.
Next I would suggest deciding what you will change about the walls, will you put up new sheet rock, paneling, wall paper or perhaps paint the walls.
However you decide to redo the walls you will need to figure out the cost of the materials, and if labor is necessary then add the labor.
The ceiling may need redoing also, perhaps you want to add a new light fixture or ceiling fan, consider these costs and add labor if you need to hire someone.
If you intend the do the work yourself and most likely work a full time job then you'll need to make out a schedule and allot so much time either daily or perhaps on the weekend. If you aren't working you would still do best with a schedule and naturally could allot more time. Figure out
a starting date and ending date. If you are hiring someone to do the job, get an overall cost on all of the labor and then decide on a schedule to have a completion date. I would suggest that you get a written estimate from each contractor that gives you a bid and have him list the individual supplies also if he is supplying them for the one price. Some contractors will expect you to supply the materials and they will do the labor. This needs to be in writing also.
I would suggest to you that you get more than one estimate on the labor and also the work and compare the estimates, perhaps at least two to three estimates. This will allow you to decide on the best person to do the work on your remodeling and also allow you to perhaps change decisions already made such as the quality of the carpenting, depending on the price you need to pay for the labor you may need to downgrade or let's hope upgrade.
Another thought would be to get references from people in your area, sometimes you will get a very low bid on contracting the labor for a remodeling job and then the contractor's work is not the quality that you expected and then you may be in for legal matters that you really don't want. Contact the Better Business Bureau in your area before hiring someone to do work in your home.
